Traverse the stunning landscape at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in search of wildlife.

Situated near Amboseli National Park with beautiful views of the Chyulu Hills to the northeast and Mount Kilimanjaro to the southwest, the Motikanju Conservancy features abundant wildlife. Explore the landscape to find plains animals including zebra, wildebeest, and other antelopes to larger animals such as giraffes or elephants. The Maasai people help protect the ecological treasures that exist within the land that they own and make use of the area for grazing their livestock.

Things to know

This part of Kenya is currently experiencing a years-long drought that has resulted in wildlife and livestock competing for scarce food and water. Animal sightings are not guaranteed, but you’ll be able to use the drone’s thermal camera to increase your chances of finding them.

  • Jun–Sep: The dry winter season has sunny days with little to no rain.
  • Oct–Dec: Beginning in late October, short rains usually transform the landscape from brown to green.
  • Jan–Feb: Hot and dry period provides a break between the short and long rains.
  • Mar–May: Long rains come in bursts, peaking in April.

Titus Nengushai

Titus has six years of experience as a dedicated Community Wildlife Ranger at MWCT, and is passionate about protecting the stunning landscape. He grew up near Motikanju Conservancy and aims to share the beauty of the land with the world while ensuring the proceeds empower and uplift the Maasai community. His work goes beyond showcasing the rich heritage of the area and inspires the community to safeguard these natural treasures for generations to come.
